Pike County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a domestic disturbance call at 11:28 yesterday morning to 5091 US Highway 98, Lot One. When they arrived at the location, they were told that Jessie Eugene Coney had driven to the location and got out of his car with a tire iron in his hand. His estranged wife, Clementine Coney then shot him in the leg, and unloaded the gun, placing it on the seat of her car. Coney then attempted to drive himself to the hospital, but ran off the highway near Presley Cars Auto Parts. He was then transported to Southwest Regional Medical Center by ambulance. Deputies reported that Jessie Coney lived at Chester Reeves Road in the County, and Clementine Coney lived on Earl Street in McComb. She was charged by the Sheriff’s Department with aggravated assault.

Norman Anthony Walker, 25, the roommate of Kevin Woodall, who was shot and killed on August 27th at their apartment
on North Railroad Boulevard in McComb, this afternoon confessed to McComb Police Detective Shannon Sullivan that he
killed Woodall after they had a fight.

Sullivan said that after several hours of interviews with Walker, the suspect admitted to the murder and related
how he had done it. Walker said the two had shared the apartment, Number 13 at 800 N. Railroad Blvd., for about
three weeks, but did not get along well. Walker shot Woodall once in the chest and once in the head. He said he
used a 38 revolver, which has not been recovered at this time, but Sullivan said the suspect has given some idea
of where the weapon may be found.

Walker is to be arraigned before the McComb City Judge at four o’clock this afternoon. He is being held by the Pike
County Sheriff’s Department without bond, and is wanted by the Mississippi Department of Corrections on a probation
violation.

Late Friday afternoon, McComb Mayor Zach Patterson dropped by the office of McComb Attorney John Ott and handed a personal check to one of Ott’s staff. The check for $4,500 was made out to McComb Police Chief Greg Martin as payment, ordered in June by District Judge David Strong, as compensation for extra attorney’s work due to a last-minute continuance granted Patterson of his trial against Chief Martin.

Patterson had missed two deadlines imposed by the Judge for the payment of the money to Martin. A few minutes after dropping off the check, the Mayor called Ott on the phone. Ott said that he was asked if the payment meant there was no need for any further court action on requests for contempt of court against the mayor.

Ott said that he told the Mayor, that in fact there was need for another hearing on the contempt charges, and it was set for Pike County District Court on September 8th. When the Mayor protested it was not necessary since he had paid the chief, Ott answered that the Mayor had failed to meet the two deadlines for making the payment, and the Mayor, in Ott’s opinion, was still in contempt of court.

About 1:50 yesterday afternoon dispatchers received a call from a very emotional female, reporting that her son appeared to be shot, according to McComb Detective Shannon Sullivan.

The woman had come to 800 N. Railroad Blvd., Apt. 13 to check on her son, who lived there with another male. Officer Bryant Harper and other officers responded, finding a young black male with a gunshot wound around the head area. He was identified as Kevin Woodall, 19 years old.

Sullivan said it was obvious that he was deceased. He was believed to have been dead for a couple of hours. The detective division and supervisors were notified of the situation, and authorities began to interview witnesses in reference to the crime.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation was notified, and they arrived along with the Mississippi Crime Lab vehicle about 4:30 pm.

Sullivan told Southwest Broadcasting that the man who occupied the apartment with the victim was being interviewed at police headquarters as a person of interest. That person, who was not identified, is being held on a Department of Corrections warrant as a probation violator.

No motive for the killing has been released, and Deputy Chief Scott McKenzie remained at the scene until investigators completed their work at the apartment.

In other news, McComb police received a call to respond to the C Store at the Exxon station on Delaware Avenue at Interstate 55 shortly after five o’clock Friday morning to learn that a robbery had just occurred.

Three black males with stockings covering their heads had entered the business through front and back doors and displayed a gun, demanding money. As they left the store, they stole the vehicle belonging to the clerk, who was not injured by the robbers.

Police spotted the getaway vehicle, giving chase into the far east section of Pike County, where the three abandoned the vehicle and disappeared into woods.

The vehicle was recovered by police in the area near the Silver Creek Church later Friday. Officers studied the surveillance cameras at the C store, and interviewed witnesses in their investigation, which continues.

The Mississippi Supreme Court yesterday filed an order denying Mayor Zach Patterson’s Petition for Permission for Interlocutory Appeal against Gregory Martin. Patterson had sought to reverse Judge David Strong’s order that Patterson must pay Greg Martin attorney’s fees of $4,500 dollars as a penalty for costs of a last minute continuance granted Patterson on June 14th. Also denied by the Court was Patterson’s demand that Judge Strong recuse himself from hearing Patterson’s trial against Police Chief Martin. Patterson also had sought a reversal of Strong’s order for Patterson to go to trial on July 19th, whether or not he had a new attorney after firing his present one.

The order the court handed down yesterday denied all of Patterson’s petitions, and was written by Presiding Justice James E. Graves, Junior.

Also yesterday the Supreme Court denied Patterson’s Petition for Permission for Interlocutory Appeal which was only filed a couple of days ago.
That request was based on Judge David’s Strong’s refusal to find McComb Attorney Norman Gillis, Junior in Contempt of Court for his brief outburst in court on July 20, 2010. Justice Graves also wrote that order denying Patterson’s Petition.

John Ott, Attorney for McComb Police Chief Greg Martin, indicated he is proceeding forthwith to pursue contempt of court charges against Patterson for failure to obey the District Court order to pay the attorney fees due Chief Martin.

A sequence of events at a home on New York Avenue in McComb is believed by authorities to have begun about 4:30 this morning, in which a 93 year old owner of the home, and her middle-aged daughter, were burglarized by what police described only as a strong male, who had gained entrance to the home through a back window and who later exited through the back door.

According to Crime Scene Investigator Ed Schwing of the McComb Police Department, who was called to the scene by Fire Chief B.J. Nettles as firemen extinguished the blaze, the fire was contained to the bedroom. A 911 call by a passerby about 8:30 alerted the fire department to the scene. According to Schwing, the suspect tore the telephone from the wall after entering. He then assaulted the daughter, beating her severely. Both mother and daughter, who were not identified by Police, were transported by ambulance to Southwest Regional Medical Center, and the daughter was later transported to a hospital in Jackson. Schwing said she had been severely beaten in the assault. It was not known how long the assailant had stayed in the home. The State Fire Marshal
arrived at the scene about 10:40 this morning, and began his investigation of the blaze. Anyone with more information on this crime are asked to call the McComb Police Department, or 911.
